Teaching Cleanliness In School

1

“Cleanliness and order are not matters of instinct; they are matters of education, and like most great things, you must cultivate a taste for them,” said Benjamin Disraeli, a famous British politician .

Who teaches children habits of cleanliness and neatness? If you answered only parents, then you are partially right. Because it is not just parents who cultivate these habits in children. Teachers too play a big role in cultivating habits of cleanliness and neatness in their students.

Here are 5 methods by which teachers can cultivate habits of cleanliness and neatness in their students.

  1. Demonstrating (The Fun Way)

    Demonstrate (The Fun Way)

  • Use posters that illustrate habits like washing hands, brushing teeth, keeping the surroundings clean.
  • Allow students to design and sketch these posters.
  • Involve students in making instruction boards which display habits of cleanliness in step by step procedures, which can then be hung up around class as reminders.
  1. Organizing Cleanliness Drives (The Activity Way)

Organizing Cleanliness Drive

  • Organize cleanliness drives in school.
  • Involve children in different activities during the drives such as picking up litter around the school, organizing classrooms, performing streets play on the importance of cleanliness, etc.
  1. Evaluate students’ hygiene habits (The Reward Way)
  • Make a structured list of dos and don’ts in the classroom.
  • The list should consist of rules like using dustbins to dispose trash, keeping desks clean, keeping books neatly, keeping the premises clean etc.
  • Evaluate students based on how well they follow the list of rules.
  • You could even declare students “Student of The Week”, based on how well he or she follows the list of do’s and dont’s in the classroom.
  1. Creating awareness on consequences of an unhygienic lifestyle (The Cleanliness Conscious  Way)
  • Demonstrate the effects of an unhygienic lifestyle to the students.
  • Create more awareness by assigning tasks where each student pins on the classroom-notice board a piece of news that talks about the effects of an unhygienic lifestyle. Encourage the students to read this notice board frequently.
  • Allow students to share their ideas on how to cultivate habits of cleanliness in daily life.
