20 Effective Study Habits You Should Practice

5

Studying is the most important responsibility that you as a student have when in school. You may have experienced failure and frustration during your studies but this is not because you lack the ability to study. Rather, this is because you need some direction and of course, some good study habits.

You cannot reap the fruit of good study habits without putting in some effort and studying. Learning effective study habits is an excellent way to optimize your performance in the examinations and get better grades. Here are a few study habits that you should do your best to cultivate.

1. Plan Your Study Time

1 (317)Study time is the time where you do any work related to your school. It may be writing assignments, studying, reading assignments or any paper project. Maintaining a proper schedule to utilize your study time is very important. Time management is an important skill that most students should absolutely possess. Study time should be spent studying, not doing other things. Once you are done studying or doing your homework, then you are free to do whatever you like. This habit might be a little hard to develop at first, but if you stick to it ( once again with some dedication and determination), doing homework and studying before playing or having fun will become second nature!

2. Set Specific Goals Every Time You Study

When you have planned your study time, you should also know where your plan takes you. Have a specific goal in mind before you start your study session. This goal should be in such a way that it helps you accomplish your study plan in an organized manner. Having goals will help you stay focused and observe your progress. Be clear about what exactly you want to achieve during study time.

3. Create A Quiet Place For Study

Creating a good study environment is important. A good study environment not only helps you studyshutterstock_37639552-[Converted] better but it also helps you retain whatever you have studied better. You will not be able to study properly, if half your attention is elsewhere, like on the TV or whatever someone else is doing. It is better to study in a quiet place with no distractions. Keeping your study place clean and organized is also equally helpful.

4. Review Before You Start

Always review your notes before you start an assignment. Your teacher made you take the notes for a reason. Also, before you start any assignment, you should at least have a basic outline for it. So review your class work and other notes and make sure you know how to complete the assignment before you start it.

5. Maintain Consistency In Your Study Time

Making an effective study plan is important but it is also important to maintain consistency in your study time. When you study at the same time each day and each week, studying will become a regular part of your life. Study sessions will also become more productive when your study time is consistent.

6. Make Sure That You Are Away From All Disturbances

Make sure that you are away from the television and other distractions such as mobile phones and laptops. If you absolutely have to use the laptop/computer, then make sure that your attention does not wander while you are working on the system. Ask your friends and family members not to disturb you during your study time.

7. Do not postpone your study plan

Students usually postpone their study plans because of a lack of interest and many other reasons. But keep in mind that successful students do not postpone or adjourn their study plans for other reasons. Postponing your study sessions makes your studying less effective. Moreover, if you do not stick to your study plan and study sessions, when you finally do need to study ( say for tests or exams) you will rush through all your material, and not even have the time to memorize it!

8. Start With The Difficult Subjects

Start your study session with the most difficult assignments/subjects etc because you will need more mental energy to complete those. Once you get these out of the way, all you will be left with are the easy assignments/subjects etc which you can get through quickly!

9. Use All Available Resources

Utilize all available resources to study or complete any particular assignment. If you are not sure where to ask for help, talk to your teacher. She will usually know of any extra resources that you may utilize. 1 (306)

10. Find A Study Group

Finding a study group can be very helpful at times. You can instantly find help with difficult topics and also help out others ( which gives you more practice on the topic). Being in a study group keeps you motivated and focused.

11. Don’t try to study too much at one time

If you try to do too much studying at one shot, you will tire out easily and your studying will not be very effective. Space the work you have to do over shorter periods of time. Do not try to cram all of your studying into one or two sessions.

12. Use Highlighters When You Are Reading

Highlighters help you learn effectively because instead of looking at a large section of text, you are only looking at the important points, which you would have highlighted. Most students use this technique when they want to memorize and understand large portions of text.

13. Write It Down

When you are not able to memorize or understand anything by reading, then try writing it down. Writing it down helps you clear your mind and draws your focus to what you are writing. It helps you understand the topic in question well and memorize it effectively too.

14. Ask For Help When Needed

When you are stuck somewhere or when you do not understand something despite your best efforts to do so, you can ask for help from your classmates, friends or teachers and at times parents too. Asking for help is not a bad thing. And it is better to ask for help, rather than to struggle over a concept and waste precious time over it.

15. Take Breaks

There is no point in studying continuously without taking breaks. Your brain needs some time off too. Taking short breaks will restore your mental energy. Taking a break also helps you study shutterstock_54000739-[Converted]more effectively in the session after the break.

16. Motivate Yourself

When you are studying, you need a driving force to motivate you to study. But it is not always possible to have a driving force (like a mom or a dad or a sibling) standing behind you to motivate you. You have learn to motivate yourself. Set yourself goals or rewards that you can collect after you have accomplished a certain amount of studying or homework.

17. Participate In Classroom Discussions

Do not leave any opportunity to participate in classroom discussions. This helps you know more about the subject as well and increases your ability to learn and understand things.

18. Take Practice Tests

There are many online blogs that allow you to take practice tests. These sites also point out the areas where you should or need to improve. Taking practice tests are a good way to prepare better for the exams.

19. Review Your School Work Over The Weekend

Review what you have learnt during the week over the weekend. This prepares you for the week ahead and also is good practice.

20. Learn From Your Mistakes

You do not have to be the student who always gets 100% on the exams. However you do need to be the student that learns from the mistakes they have made. It’s okay if you have screwed up on one text. You can always make it up on the next, or study better. You cannot reap rewards without a little bit of hard work after all.
